Scope
Two Open Loop Geothermal
Wells
Magpie Drilling successfully procured,
coordinated and delivered the drilling of 2 open loop wells for
a ground source energy scheme at Imperial College’s Hammersmith
Campus. Drilling was carried out using a Comacchio MC3000 with
10m beko rods and carousel handling system.
The construction consisted of the drilling and installation of
324mm OD mild steel casing through the tertiary deposits of the
London Basin to a depth of 80m to engage with water bearing
competent chalk deposits below. The holes were started off with
rotary flight augers to approximately 50m below ground level and
finished to the top of the chalk deposits with rotary mud flush
using clay inhibitors, filtration polymers and also bentonite
products to achieve borehole stability and cutting returns. Once
the 324mm OD casing had been securely grouted in place the hole
was completed using rotary water flush techniques within the
chalk aquifer to the completion depth of 140m. Once the
boreholes were complete, the wells were acidized and developed
to achieve the required pumping yields.
All the works were undertaken on a very sensitive and
constricted site that was bounded by a “blue route” that
transports patients to the cardiac arrest emergency response
centre. Works were carried out with careful consideration to
noise levels at the site boundary and specific pre planned and
approved procedures of work for all operations, logistics and
movements. The works were completed without any complaints and
Magpie Drilling were thanked for their efforts and successful
delivery of the project.

Scope
48 x 100m Closed Loop wells
Drilling and installation of 48 x 100m deep
closed loop borehole field for an existing School. Following the
successful installation of the test borehole Magpie were
retained as the geothermal drilling contractor. The drilling
works were completed well ahead of programme after careful
selection and development of the mud drilling programme.
Following the successful implementation of the drilling works
Magpie were then retained to carry out the headerworks for the
borehole field and provided Construction Quality Assurance
testing of the system.

2 Open Loop wells
Magpie’s services have been retained by
Holloway White Allom Limited for the drilling, installation and
pump testing of 2 open loop geothermal wells for supplying
ground sourced heating and cooling capability at some of
Grosvenor’s luxury domestic properties around the square.
Following several planning meetings to ensure the project team
formed a close working group, initial geophysical surveys to
locate deep buried services organised by Magpie have been
successfully completed.

61 Closed Loop Holes
Drilling and installation of a 61 closed
loop 105m deep borehole field for a new development of 17
separate offices. Working as the geothermal drilling contractor
with Mitie who were employed as the M&E Installation Contractor
the drilling works were completed on programme. Following the
successful implementation of the drilling works Magpie were then
retained to carry out the headerworks for the borehole field and
provided Construction Quality Assurance testing of the system.

Scope: 4 Open Loop Wells
Successful drilling and installation of a
total of 4 open loop wells to approximately 140m with a finished
hole diameter of 300mm for a commercial development in Croydon.
Working as the geothermal drilling contractor for Kiers London
the works included the drilling and installation of 40m of steel
casing and a final drilled depth of 140m into the chalk and the
subsequent development and acidisation to maximise the
productivity of the wells. This was then closely followed by a
thorough test pumping programme to ensure the yield available
from the wells was sufficient for the needs of the development.

28 Very Deep Closed Loop
Bores
Drilling and installation of 18 closed loop
borehole field to 155 - 177m with Wates Construction Limited for
the 10 Eastbourne Terrace development. Following the high
service levels and professional attitude given by our drilling
crews on site Magpie were then retained to drill and install 10
closed loop boreholes to 170m for the development of 30
Eastbourne Terrace and also to drill and install a 160m
groundwater extraction well to supply non potable water to the
developments.
