Closed
Loop

Closed loop wells work by drilling a hole to
depths of up to 200m depending on ground conditions and
installing a HDPE loop and thermally enhanced bentonite grout
surround. These can be installed in systems from a single
borehole to multiple hundreds depending on the heating and
cooling requirements of the building. This is then connected to
the heat pump back in the plant room via headering pipework and
manifolds. The closed loop system is by far the most common
application of ground source energy within the UK. This is due
to the flexibility and relatively low risk of the system from a
performance point of view.
Obviously, design is key to the successful execution of any
system and ground source is certainly no exception. Experienced
designers with recognised qualifications are integral to an
efficient and sustainable system.
